Import Export (IE) Code is a 10 digit code issued by DGFT – Director General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India to Indian Companies. IEC is mandatory for starting a business of Import or Export in India. IE Codes once issued can be used throughout its existence and doesn’t require any renewal or filing.

It is imperative for all importers & exporters to mention their IE Code for customs clearance when their goods arrive in India and while exporting their goods from India. Moreover, as per RBI, it is compulsory for all traders to mention IE code while making a payment transfer to a foreign bank account. It is mandatory for sole proprietors, Partnerships or Private limited companies dealing in imports and exports of goods to have an import-export code.
